Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

13 Indeed he used to be joyful among his folk,
14 and indeed he thought he would never return.
15 Yes indeed, his Lord sees him best.
16 So I swear by the evening glow,
17 by the night and what it is fraught with,
18 by the moon when it blooms full:
19 you will surely fare from stage to stage.
20 So what is the matter with them
that they will not believe?
21 And when the Qur’ān is recited to them
they will not prostrate?
22 Rather the faithless deny,
23 and Allah knows best what they keep to themselves.
24 So warn them of a painful punishment,
25 except such as are faithful
and do righteous deeds:
there will be an everlasting reward for them.

85. Sūrat al-Burūj 1

In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

1 By the sky with its houses,
2 by the Promised Day,
3 by the Witness 2 and the Witnessed:3
4 perish the Men of the Ditch!

1 The sūrah takes its name from “the houses” (burūj) mentioned in verse 1.

2 That is the Prophet (); cf. 2:143; 4:41; 16:89; 33:45.

3 That is, the Day of Judgement; cf. 11:103
