Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

33 Though they were not sent to watch over them.
34 So today the faithful
will laugh at the faithless,
35 observing from couches:
36 Have the faithless been requited
for what they used to do?

84. Sūrat al-Inshiqāq 1

In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

1 When the sky is split open
2 and gives ear to its Lord as it should.
3 When the earth is spread out
4 and throws out what is in it, emptying itself,
5 and gives ear to its Lord as it should.
6 O man!
You are labouring toward your Lord laboriously,
and you will encounter Him.
7 Then as for him who is given his record
in his right hand,
8 he shall soon receive an easy reckoning,
9 and he will return to his folks joyfully.
10 But as for him who is given his record
from behind his back,
11 he will pray for annihilation,2
12 and he will enter the Blaze.

1 Named after the “splitting open” (inshiqāq) of the sky mentioned in verse 1.

2 Cf. 25:13-14, 78:40.
