Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

34 gave a little and held off?
35 Does he have the knowledge of the Unseen
so that he sees?
36 Has he not been informed of what is
in the scriptures of Moses,
37 and of Abraham, who fulfilled [his summons]:
38 that no bearer shall bear another’s burden,
39 and that nothing belongs to man
except what he strives for,
40 and that he will soon be shown his endeavour,
41 then he will be rewarded for it
with the fullest reward;
42 and that the terminus is toward your Lord,
43 and that it is He who makes [men] laugh,
and makes [them] weep,
44 and that it is He who brings death and gives life,
45 and that it is He who created the mates,1
the male and the female,
46 from a drop of [seminal] fluid when emitted;
47 and that with Him lies the second genesis,
48 and that it is He who enriches and grants possessions,
49 and that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius;
50 and that it is He who destroyed the former ‘Ād,
51 and Thamud,
sparing none [of them];
52 and the people of Noah before that;
indeed they were more unjust and rebellious;
53 and He overthrew the town that was overturned,2

1 Or ‘the sexes.’

2 That is, Sodom. Elsewhere mentioned as plural; see 9:70, 69:9.
