124. Behold, after His Lord put Abraham
To test with certain words,1 and he fulfilled them,
He said: "I'm making you for people an Imam"2;
He asked: And what of my descendants?
"My covenant", said He, "does not embrace,
The ones who would transgress."
125. And do remember that We made this House,3
A place of gathering for humankind,
And a safe sanctuary; do take a place,
Of prayer, where Abraham was wont to stand;
Abraham We enjoined with Ishmael,
To cleanse My House for people who go round
It, or retreat there, or in worship kneel.
126. Behold, Abraham prayed: "My Lord,
Make this a safe and peaceful land,
And those among its people who have faith,
In God and the Last Day, provide with
Sustenances of every kind."
He answered: "Even those who have no faith,
I'll feed for a short while, then I shall drive,
Them to the chastisement of Fire:
An evil station at which to arrive!
127. And after Abraham and Ishmael,
Raised the foundations of this House,
1. Commands
2. Leader of mankind.
3. The Ka'ba at Mecca.
