Fazlollah Nikayin, The Quran; The First Poetic Translation (2000)
And God watches your every action.
86. These people buy this worldly life,
At the expense of the Hereafter;
Their punishment shall not be lightened,
Nor are they helped from any quarter.
87. We did to Moses give the Scriptures,
And, after him, sent a succession
Of messengers;
To Jesus, son of Mary, We had given
The clearest Signs,1 and We had even,
Strengthened him with the Holy Spirit.
How is it that each time some messenger,
Unto you comes whose message does not fit,
Your fancies, then you proudly either
Call some of them impostors,
Or some of them you murder?!
88. They say: "Our hearts have been securely sealed;"2
Nay, God has cursed them for their unbelief;
Little is what they ever have believed.
89. Now that a Book from God has to them come,
Confirming what's already with them,3 they
Reject it, but, till now, they used to pray
For victory against the disbelievers,
Before their prophecy had come to pass;4
Thus is God's curse upon the disbelievers.
1. Also meaning: "Miracles".
2. Meaning: with the Book of God inside our hearts, they will never be penetrated!
3. Their scriptures.
4. The prophecy of the coming of "that prophet".
