Fazlollah Nikayin, The Quran; The First Poetic Translation (2000)
83. Behold, from Israelites 1 We took,
A covenant to this effect:
Serve none but God; show kindness to,
Your parents and your kinsfolk,
And to the orphans and the helpless;
Be fair to people when you speak;
And do keep up salaat 2 and pay zakaat.
But then, except a few among you,
You did backslide, and turned about,
And even now you're turning back.
84. Behold, We took another covenant,
From you: You shall not shed your kinsmen's blood,
Nor turn each other out from your own towns,
Which you confirmed, and bore witness to God.
85. Yet here you are: killing your brethren,
And driving groups out of their homes,
And making sinful and aggressive unions,
Against them, and if they surrender,
To you, you trade upon their ransoms,
Whereas it surely was forbidden,
To banish them at all: Do you not rather
Believe in one part of the Scripture,
And disbelieve another?!
What should then be the retribution,
Of those among you who behave like this?
It is in this world's life, humiliation,
And there shall be for them a graver
Torment, Upon the Day of Resurrection;
1. The Children of Israel.
2. The daily prayers.
