Fazlollah Nikayin, The Quran; The First Poetic Translation (2000)

As you, when some of them who used to hear,
The Word of God, distorted it on purpose,
After an understanding clear?

16. Do they not really know that Allah knows,
What they keep secret and what they disclose?!

78. There are amongst them some unlettered folks,
Who do not know the Book, and so they have to
Depend on lies, guess-work and hoax.

79. Thus, woe to those who write the Scripture,
With their own hands, and then declare:
"This is from God", seeking some paltry gains,
And woe to them for their distortions;
And woe to them indeed for their
Illicit acquisitions!

80. They also say: "the Fire is not to touch us
Except for a few days, "say: Have you taken
A pledge from God?-surely God never breaks
His word-or is it that you have just spoken
Something of which you have no ken?!

81. But truly those committing evil,
Who are beset by sin on every side,
Shall be companions of the Fire,
Wherein they will for long abide.

82. And those who do believe and do good work,
Shall be companions of the Garden where
They will for long reside.
