To specify for us how she should look,
For to us all such heifers are alike,
So that, God willing, make we no mistake!"
71. He said: "He says that she should be a heifer
Not ever yoked to plough the earth,
Nor made to water any tilth,
Sound, with no blemish whatsoever."
They said: Now you have brought the truth!"
And then they offered her in sacrifice,
Although to it, they were averse!
72. Also recall to mind: You slew a soul,
Then you began to disagree about,
The crime, and it was Allah who let out
What you were trying to conceal.
73. "Yea, We said: "Strike the body with a piece
Taken from her."1 Thus God revives,
The dead, and lets you see His Signs,
That you may realize.
74. But even after that your hearts became,
As hard as rocks; nay, even harder,
For there are rocks from which some rivers
Gush forth, and others which when split asunder,
Let water out, and others that fall down,
For fear of God; and God is never
Unmindful of your deeds.
75. Do you 2 indeed expect them 3 to believe,
1. The sacrificed heifer.
2. Believers, Muslims.
3. The Jews.
