Fazlollah Nikayin, The Quran; The First Poetic Translation (2000)
50. Remember when We opened up the waters,
To rescue you, and had the followers
Of Pharaoh drowned before your very eyes.
51. Remember We communed with Moses,
For forty nights, but in his absence,
You took the calf to idolize,
Committing an abhorrence!
52. We did forgive you even then, so now,
To show your gratefulness, you have a chance.
53. Behold, We gave to Moses then,
The Book and the Criterion,1
In order that you may have guidance.
54. Recall that Moses to his people said;
"O people, you have wronged your souls in truth,
By worshipping the calf, so in repentance,
Turn to your Maker, and then put to death
The culprits: that will be for you far better
In the sight of your Maker;"
And that He thus redeems you, for He is,
The Mercifol Redeemer.
55. Remember that you said: "O Moses, We
Will not believe in you until we see
Allah with our own eyes!" And at that moment,
The lightning struck you as a punishment,
While you were looking on without a motion;
1. Original: Al-Furqaan meaning: "Distinction, and, the standard of judgment between right and wrong, truth and falsehood”; Porqan in Aramaic stands for "Salvation".
