56. And then We raised you up again,
After your death, so that you might
Show some appreciation.
57. Behold, We caused the clouds to give you shade,
And We sent down to you: manna and quails,
Saying: "Do eat of the good things We made
To be your meals;"
Beware, they did no harm to Us at all,
But they did harm to their own souls.
58. Behold, We said: "Enter this town 1
And, as you please, eat of its plenty,
Pass through the gate with amity,
Humbly repeating: 'Hitta-toun',2
We will forgive you every sin,
And pour Our bounty,
On those who do good unto others.
59. But the transgressors changed the words,
Spoken to them, so We upon them sent,
Pestilence from the heavens,
Because of their infringement.
60. Recall that Moses for his people's sake,
Demanded water, and We answered: "strike
That rock there with your rod", and thereupon,
Twelve springs from it gushed forth, and so each tribe,
Knew their own drinking-place, and we did mention:
"Of Allah's sustenance, eat and imbibe,
1. Jerusalem or Jericho.
2. Meaning: "Forgive us", "We repent" or simply "forgiveness".
