You manifest and all that you disguise.
34. Behold, We told the angels: "Bow yourselves,
To Adam"; and they bowed, except Iblees,1
Who in his pride refused, and thus he proved
To be faithless and thankless.
35. To Adam We then said: "Go with your spouse
To live in Paradise,2 and of its fruits
Eat to the content of your hearts,
But do not go near this one tree,3
For then you both will be,
Harming yourselves and others."
36. After a time, however, Satan did
Make them both slip and fall,
And did bring them out of the very
Condition they were in, and We decreed:
"Go hence, descend you all;
There is to be among you enmity,
Upon the Earth, you shall abide
With some provisions for a period.
37. Then Adam, from his Lord, received some words' 4
1. Satan; the word Iblees is derived from a Semitic root meaning "being wounded, discarded, and desperate"; compare ’Diabolis’.
2. The Garden of Eden is most probably not a place on the earth, because it was after the fall that they were sentenced to live on earth.
3. The tree is not named because there was nothing intrinsically evil in the tree itself; a tree was merely chosen for the purpose of a trial, and they were duly warned not to violate God's command.
