And then you will to Him return.
29. He is the One who did for you create,
All that the earth contains,
And turning to the sky, He fashioned
It into Seven Heavens;
He has full Knowledge of all things.
30. Behold, your Lord said to the angels: "I
Will place a khalif 1 on the earth", they said:
Will You be placing one therein who could
Be doing evil there and shedding blood,
While we already sing Your praise and glory,
And only You we hallow?"
"Surely I know", He said, "what you do not know."
31. He now taught Adam all the Names,2 and set
Them all before the angels, saying:
"Tell me the names of these, if you be right".
"Glory to you", they said, "We have no ken,
Except that which You have unto us given,
You are alone the Knower, Full of Wisdom.
33. He said: "O Adam, do inform them,
Of all those names", and when he told them
The names, He said: "Did I not tell you that
I know the truths and secrets of the skies,
And of the earth, and only I Know what
1. Vicegerent, deputy, representative, successor.
2. The names of all things means the inner nature and qualities of things, which include "feelings", which are outside the nature of angels.
