Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

detestable to your Lord.
39 These are among [precepts] that
your Lord has revealed to you of wisdom.
Do not set up another god besides Allah,
or you will be cast into hell,
blameworthy, banished.

40 Did your Lord prefer you for sons,
and [Himself] adopt females from among the angels?1
Indeed you say a monstrous word!
41 Certainly We have paraphrased
[the principles of guidance] in this Qur’ān
so that they may take admonition,
but it increases them only in aversion.
42 Say, ‘Were there [other] gods besides Him,
as they say,
they would surely encroach on the Lord of the Throne.
43 Immaculate is He,
and greatly exalted above what they say!’
44 The seven heavens glorify Him,
and the earth [too], and whoever is in them.
There is not a thing but celebrates His praise,
but you do not understand their glorification.
Indeed He is all-forbearing, all-forgiving.

45 When you recite the Qur’ān,
We draw between you
and those who do not believe in the Hereafter

1 Cf. 4:117; 37:150; 43:19; 53:21, 27.
