Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

88. Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah 1

In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

1 Did you receive the account of the Enveloper?
2 Some faces on that day will be humbled,
3 wrought-up and weary:
4 they will enter a scorching fire,
5 and made to drink from a boiling spring.
6 They will have no food except cactus,
7 neither nourishing,
nor availing against hunger.
8 Some faces on that day will be joyous,
9 pleased with their endeavour;
10 in a lofty paradise,
11 wherein they will not hear any vain talk.
12 In it there is a flowing spring
13 and in it there are raised couches,
14 and goblets set,
15 and cushions laid out in an array,
16 and carpets spread out.
17 Do they not observe 2 the camel,
[to see] how she has been created?
18 and the sky, how it has been raised?
19 and the mountains, how they have been set?
20 and the earth, how it has been surfaced?

1 The sūrah is named after ‘the Enveloper’ (al-ghāshiyah), mentioned in verse 1.

2 Or ‘consider.’
