Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)
102. Sūrat al-Takāthur 1
In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1 Rivalry [and vainglory] distracted you
2 until you visited [even] the graves.
3 No indeed!
Soon you will know!
4 Again, no indeed!
Soon you will know!
5 No indeed!
Were you to know with certain knowledge,
6 you would surely see hell.
7 Again, you will surely see it with the eye of certainty.
8 Then, that day, you will surely be questioned
concerning the blessing.
103. Sūrat al-‘Aṣr 2
In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
1 By Time!
2 Indeed man is in loss,
3 except those who have faith
and do righteous deeds,
1 The sūrah takes its name from the ‘rivalry’ (takāthur) mentioned in verses 1-3.
2 The sūrah takes its name from the phrase ‘By Time’ (wal ‘aṣr) in verse 1.
