Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

99. Sūrat al-Zalzalah 1

In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

1 When the earth is rocked with a terrible quake
2 and the earth discharges her burdens,
3 and man says, ‘What is the matter with her?’
4 On that day she will relate her chronicles
5 for her Lord will have inspired her.
6 On that day, mankind will issue forth in various groups 2
to be shown their deeds.
7 So whoever does an atom’s weight of good
will see it,
8 and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil
will see it.

100. Sūrat al-‘Ādiyāt 3

In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

1 By the snorting chargers,
2 by the strikers of sparks [with their hoofs],
3 by the raiders at dawn,
4 raising therein a trail of dust,

1 The sūrah takes its name, meaning ‘the quake’ (Zalzalah) from verse 1.

2 Or ‘separate groups.’

3 The sūrah takes its name from ‘the chargers’ (al-‘ādiyāt) mentioned in verse 1.
