Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

82. Sūrat al-Infiṭār 1

In the Name of Allah,
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

1 When the sky is rent apart,
2 when the stars are scattered,
3 when the seas are merged,
4 when the graves are overturned,
5 then a soul shall know what it has sent ahead
and left behind.
6 O man!
What has deceived you about your generous 2 Lord,
7 who created you and proportioned you,
and gave you an upright nature,
8 and composed you in any form that He wished?
9 No indeed! Rather you deny the Retribution.
10 Indeed, there are over you watchers,
11 noble writers
12 who know whatever you do.
13 Indeed the pious shall be amid bliss,
14 and indeed the vicious shall be in hell
15 entering it on the Day of Retribution,3
16 and they shall not be absent from it.
17 And what will show you
what is the Day of Retribution?

1 The sūrah takes its name from “the renting apart” (infiṭār) of the sky mentioned in verse 1.

2 Or ‘noble.’

3 Or ‘the Day of Judgement.’
