Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

to worship Allah
with exclusive faith in Him,
12 and I have been commanded
to be the first of those who submit [to Him].’
13 Say, ‘Indeed, should I disobey my Lord, I fear
the punishment of a tremendous day.’
14 Say, ‘[Only] Allah do I worship,
putting my exclusive faith in Him.
15 You worship whatever you wish besides Him.’
Say, ‘Indeed the losers are those
who ruin themselves and their families
on the Day of Resurrection.’
Look! That is a manifest loss!
16 There will be canopies of fire above them,
and [similar] canopies beneath them.
With that Allah deters His servants.
So, My servants, be wary of Me!
17 As for those who
stay clear of the worship of the Rebel
and turn penitently to Allah,
there is good news for them.
So give good news to My servants
18 who listen to the word [of Allah]
and follow the best [sense] of it.
They are the ones whom Allah has guided,
and it is they who possess intellect.
19 Can he
against whom the word of punishment has become due?1
Can you rescue someone who is in the Fire?

1 Ellipsis; the omitted phrase is, ‘escape his punishment?’
