Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

Immaculate is He!
He is Allah, the One, the All-paramount.
5 He created the heavens and the earth
with reason.
He winds the night over the day,
and winds the day over the night,
and He has disposed the sun and the moon,
each moving for a specified term.1
Look! He is the All-mighty, the All-forgiver!
6 He created you from a single soul,
then made from it its mate,
and He has sent down for you
eight mates of the cattle.2
He creates you in the wombs of your mothers,
creation after creation,
in a threefold darkness.
That is Allah, your Lord!
To Him belongs all sovereignty.
There is no god except Him.
Then where are you being led away?
7 If you are ungrateful,3
indeed Allah has no need of you,
though He does not approve
ingratitude for His servants;
and if you give thanks He approves that for you.
No bearer shall bear another’s burden;
then to your Lord will be your return,

1 Or ‘until a specified time.’

2 Cf. 6:143.

3 Or ‘faithless.’
