Ali Quli Qarai, The Qur’ān with a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation (2005)

and behold,
it was swallowing what they had faked.
46 Thereat the magicians fell down prostrating.
47 They said,
‘We believe in the Lord of all the worlds,
48 the Lord of Moses and Aaron.’
49 He said,
‘Do you profess faith in Him before I permit you?
He is indeed your chief who has taught you magic!
Soon you will surely know!
Surely I will cut off your hands and feet
from opposite sides,
and I will surely crucify you all.’
50 They said, ‘[There is] no harm [in that]!
Indeed we shall return to our Lord.
51 Indeed we hope
our Lord will forgive us our iniquities
for being the first to believe.’
52 Then We revealed to Moses,
[saying], ‘Take My servants on a journey by night,
for you will be pursued.’
53 Then Pharaoh sent
heralds to the cities,
54 [announcing:] ‘These 1 are indeed a small gang.
55 They have surely aroused our wrath,
56 and indeed we are al on our guard.’2
57 So We expelled them from gardens and springs,
58 and [from] treasures and splendid places.

1 That is, the Israelites.

2 Or, ‘Surely we are all a well-armed host.’
